First UPA European regional conference to take place from 4th to 6th of December, 2008 in Turin, Italy

Poster submissions are now open until May 30th!

The first European regional conference of the Usability Professionals’ Association (UPA) will take place on December 4th, 5th and 6th, 2008 in Turin, Italy, when the city is also the 2008 World Design Capital. 400 participants are expected to attend.

The theme of the conference is "usability and design: cultivating diversity".

Usability and design are professional approaches that are often seen separately. Usability is perceived to be focused on establishing standards, rather than a culture of practices to make products and services simpler, easier, and more pleasant to us. Design on the other hand is often connected to creativity and innovation.

This conceptual separation - which this conference sets out to overcome - is reflected in how the consultancy market is composed, how companies organise their staff, and the different professional languages in use.

In order to transcend this separation, understanding and cultivating diversity is crucial, especially in Europe - a continent characterised by great diversity.

Inspired by the "Slow Food" cultural movement, which aims to protect and defend our world's heritage of agricultural biodiversity and gastronomic traditions and has its headquarters nearby Torino, the European UPA members are invited to bring their own original contributions to the growth of the usability culture and practice.

“The UPA Europe conference provides a great opportunity
to reinforce the importance of usability and user-centered design
in Europe, and will underline the central role of the UPA
in advocating these ideas”
Michele Visciola, UPA European regional

The conference is taking place in the Italian city of Turin which will then also organise a large variety of activities as the first ever World Design Capital – a title it was awarded by ICSID (the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design). Reflecting this context, the UPA conference will particularly focus on the relationship between usability and design.

We invite you to share your ideas and experiences with fellow practitioners at the First Regional Usability Professionals' Association conference in Europe, by submitting proposals for presentations, papers, and exhibits.
